EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States

The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the US on five Europeans involved in combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted individuals who have been at the heart of campaigns to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

The DSA is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities argue the rules are essential to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.
