The US Justice Department have officially joined a lawsuit initiated by California Republicans, aiming to prevent the state's recently passed congressional redistricting map.
This court case, filed in federal court, targets the map championed by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was developed in reaction against a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"California's redistricting scheme constitutes a brazen power grab that violates civil rights and mocks the democratic process," declared the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have voiced assurance that the redistricting plan will survive legal scrutiny.
"These opponents lost at the ballot box and soon they will also lose in court," commented a representative for the governor.
Legal Basis
The lawsuit asserts that California's map wrongfully utilized race as a factor to heavily favor Hispanic voters in violation of the federal constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a proxy to further partisan goals, but that is exactly what the state legislature did with the redistricting measure," argued a high-ranking representative from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
The legal battle constitutes the most significant response by the Democratic party in the continuing political battle that began in Texas and has extended to various parts of the country.
Unlike other states, where Republican state legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan required voter approval, which it obtained with nearly 65% of the vote.
Wider Consequences
The Democratic party need to flip just a handful of GOP-controlled House seats to gain majority of the chamber in next year's midterm election.
The political group controlling the controlling share will shape the final years of the sitting president's term, deciding if a GOP-controlled legislature will persist in implementing its agenda or face resistance, congressional probes and potential additional obstacles.
